Are all your programs free?
Yes. The Learning Centre offers a range of FREE programs in study skills and study management at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, writing programs, second language support, and a special pathfinder program. We also hold FREE workshops in Tuition-free weeks and on weekends throughout the academic year. There is a small charge for the Powerplus Writing and Powerplus Essay Writing books that accompany the writing programs.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
Most of the time, you just need your enthusiasm, but students who have participated in programs in the past have commented how useful it is to incorporate current academic requirements (assignments, essays, research, etc) into the seminar activities. Therefore, you might want to bring your unit outlines, assignments or proposals you are working on, or notes from supervisors and lecturers.
How do I get an individual consultation with a lecturer?
For the majority of students, attendance at The Learning Centre's programs leads to improvement in academic performance; some students however, need follow-up assistance and reinforcement of what they have learned in the seminars. For this reason, The Learning Centre offers free one-hour individual tutorial consultations to students who have attended five two-hour seminars. Once you have completed the ten hours of workshops with The Learning Centre, you need to get a referral (see referral form) from your lecturer, course coordinator, or supervisor.
Does my lecturer or school have to know I am attending the TLC programs?
To attend our seminars, there is no requirement that you inform your lecturer or your school. However, if you would like to take advantage of an individual consultation, we believe that the relationship we have with you is strengthened by a partnership with your lecturer or school. If you ask for an individual consultation, we will ask you to get a referral from your lecturer, course coordinator, or supervisor.
Will you proofread my assignment?
No. The Learning Centre?s philosophy is to support you as you develop the skills and knowledge necessary for you to succeed. If you request assistance with an assignment, we will provide assistance, but it is more likely to focus on understanding the brief, planning and time management, and essay structure than on placement of full stops and capital letters.
Do you do preparation for IETLS?
No. The Learning Centre is for enrolled students at Curtin University of Technology Since the IELTS is taken prior to enrolment, we do not provide IELTS preparation. Please see DOLIE for preparation courses conducted at Curtin.
What should I do if I do not know what seminars will be useful for me?
Take the skills test to see if your responses point you in the direction of study skills and management seminars we offer. Then, register. Otherwise, come in to The Learning Centre office and someone will talk to you about our programs.
What does it mean to get a referral?
In order to arrange an individual consultation at The Learning Centre, you need a referral from your lecturer, course coordinator or supervisor. How to arrange a referral is outlined here.
Can students working in groups get support as well?
Yes. We have a Working in Groups Seminar in the Study Management program. Also, if you and your group members have attended ten hours of our programs, you can book a consultation time, but be sure to tell us you are coming with your group.
Do you have anxiety or procrastination workshops?
The Pathfinder program, which is all about personal academic focus, motivation, building on strengths, defining goals, overcoming learning blocks, managing challenges, and trouble-shooting problems can help to alleviate some of the stress that occurs as you encounter new situations at Curtin. However, if you are feeling that your anxieties or procrastination are getting in the way of your potential success, contact Curtin Counselling Services. Not only can Counsellors meet with you, the Counselling Service also offers workshops on procrastination, dealing with presentation and exam anxiety, addressing perfectionism and assertive communication.
Exactly where is The Learning Centre and Room 105:153?
The Learning Centre is in the centre of campus, on the ground floor of the Robertson Library Building 105. There are large glass doors under the large staircases leading to the Library entrance. Go through the glass doors and turn left. Our office and reception desk (Room 150) is located on your left as you go along the corridor. Our seminar room (Room 153) is located just past our office and reception desk, on the right.
Is there a limit to the individual consultation assistance I can get?
Under normal circumstances, students may make up to 3 appointments per semester for individual consultation. For more than 3 consultations per semester, your lecturer or supervisor will need to contact The Learning Centre to discuss your request. The How to Refer document describes the process to get a referral.
If my classmates and I want to learn about a study skill such as referencing, note-taking or oral presentations, can we book an appointment?
If you can organise a group of 12 or more students who have the same interest, we will hold a special seminar for you and work with you to apply your skills successfully to your studies.
What can I do if the seminar or series I want to register for is FULL?
The Learning Centre programs are popular. When the maximum quota of students has been reached, you will be unable to register for that particular seminar or series online via The Learning Centre website.
Please check if there is another series or repeat seminar running later on during the semester. Alternatively please contact The Learning Centre Admin Officer on 9266 3825 and ask to be registered.
